Empowering People, Launching lives

Empowering futures through skill acquisition

Only 30% of autistic adults are in paid employment highlighting a critical gap that affects independence, self-esteem, and quality of life. Employability doesn’t happen overnight, that’s why it’s embedded into our services, with learners building the skills they need to thrive in work and life.

Over the past few years, our Key Stage 3 pupils (ages 11-14), have been working towards the AQA Unit Award Scheme, focusing on developing employability skills that pave the way towards a future of choice and opportunity.

The Award Scheme

The Scheme was introduced as part of a dedicated employability pathway aimed at exposing learners to different activities and exploring different employment options. Through the Scheme, pupils have the opportunity to engage in hands-on learning experiences across six key strands:

  • Office Work
  • Creative Industries
  • Catering and Hospitality
  • Manufacturing
  • Retail
  • Community and Horticulture

Within each strand, learners engage in different tasks from filing and housekeeping to gardening – gaining practical skills and new experiences that shape their future decision-making.

The approach focuses on a “can-do” philosophy, celebrating each pupil’s progress with every completed unit. Their certificates build a portfolio that showcasing their skills, knowledge, and achievements, boosting confidence and preparing them for new challenges, including the exciting journey into work experience.

Breaking barriers and unlocking potential

The Award Scheme has opened doors to new experiences for our learners, with two awards completed in Office Work and Creative Industries during Spring 1. One pupil discovered a passion for horticulture, developing focus, patience, and a sense of responsibility through planting and garden maintenance. Another pupil, who initially hesitated to take on roles like leading class registration in the morning, has gained the confidence to lead and engage with peers in a new way adding “I love Art and Craft” when asked about their programme.

The Scheme has allowed pupils to explore interests they might not have encountered otherwise, and for some, it’s sparked ideas for potential career pathways. These achievements go beyond skill development—they represent progress in social interaction, independence, and community inclusion.

One parent shared, It’s amazing to see my child try new things and grow in ways we didn’t think were possible. He’s so much more confident now, and I can see a future for him that feels hopeful and exciting.

Looking Ahead

For the 2024/25 academic year, pupils are set to complete six units as part of the employability pathway. Progress is carefully tracked through a moderation system, ensuring that learners build on their skills and ideally move through levels from pre-entry to Level 2 qualifications. Our goal is to ensure that every KS3 pupil leaves with a strong foundation of practical skills, a portfolio of achievements, and the confidence to pursue their goals.
