Cooking with Charlie

Around half of school aged children said they would like help planning for adult life[1]. The specialist curriculum and approach that we use in our services provides learners with the skills they need to live a life full of choice and control. At Post-19 in particular, there is a specific focus on vocational skills based around a learner’s interests.

Through his work experience and preparation for adulthood, one student at Post-19 has seen his passion for food blossom. From making tasty treats in the hub to developing his chef skills through work experience, Charlie loves creating food. He also loves to talk about food and share his passion. Over the course of this year, Charlie will be sharing some of his favourite recipes for you all to try at home.

 

About the chef

Hi there, my name is Charlie. I have autism, and I am very enthusiastic about cooking and food. I like cooking because I have always loved food ever since I was a small boy in the 2000s.

 

My experience

I have had many years of experience in restaurants and street food businesses. From sushi, grilled meat and pasta to even Turkish style kebabs.

 

About my blog

I want to write this blog to show my progress and footsteps into the world and seek new food adventures.

I will share my pancake recipe in my first blog because I think pancake is a classic food and it is very popular.

Recipes and step by step instructions: pancakes

Ingredients

  • 1 heaped mug full of self-raising flour
  • 1 egg
  • Small handful of caster sugar
  • 1 mug full of whole milk
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • Vegetable oil, for frying in
  • Toppings of your choice (maple syrup, lemon juice and sugar etc. My favourite toppings either will be Nutella or maple syrup!)

 

Method:

  1. In a large mixing bowl add in the flour, egg, milk, sugar and salt and whisk until thick and smooth.
  2. Preheat the frying pan on a low – medium heat and add in a drizzle of vegetable oil.
  3. Then add the batter in the pan 1 ½ ladles full per pancake.
  4. Cook them for a few minutes until lightly browned on both sides.
  5. Place on a plate and serve with whatever topping you fancy.
