The Shrubberies is a maintained special school catering for pupils with severe or profound learning disabilities, aged from 2 to 19. All pupils, apart from those in the Nursery, have an Education, Health and Care Plan. All staff, both teachers and support staff, receive comprehensive and ongoing training in meeting the needs of pupils and students with severe, profound and complex learning difficulties. There is an induction programme for new teachers. This is followed by an ongoing assessment as part of the comprehensive performance management policy to ensure all have the opportunity to develop their skills within the school. In addition to the more specialist curriculum training dependent upon the area of interest and expertise of staff, all receive training in safeguarding, manual handling and fire and risk assessment. Many staff are also trained in Total Communication, PECS, first aid, medication administration, wade and rescue, behaviour management, food hygiene, Midas training (minibus) and Team Teach. The school benefits from having its own Total Communication and Team Teach trainers and a specialist teacher of pupils and students with severe, complex and profound learning difficulties and disabilities.
